Combining high and thin rolling elements on stage is always a worry regarding stability. Fortunately, tipping is a phenomenon both predictable and preventable. For La Fuite, directed at the Marseille National Theater by Macha Makeïeff, the challenge was to predict and prevent tipping of 6 meters height rolling elements with the smallest wheelbase, and actors on the first floor. The approach combined structural validation, mass calculation and tests.

After reviewing the original construction, we calculated the center mass to optimize the structure. The addition of counterweights at the right place finished the job. The side challenge being to have elements movable on wheels by a maximum of two technicians forced us to consider any mass increase sparingly.

Ultimately, an in situ test protocol validated the theory as predicted. Good to go for touring around the country!
